Join us April 30th for the Binghamton DIY Fest!!!

What is a DIY Fest you say? Well DIY, or Do-It-Yourself, is the belief that people can do whatever they put their minds to without relying entirely on others. There is no clear definition of DIY culture and DIY may mean many different things to a number of people. Some may be attracted to DIY culture for some anti-consumerist beliefs, and maybe another person just likes to do projects around the house. DIY culture transcends age and cultural boundaries and promotes improving oneself and strengthening community relationships both between people and with the Earth. DIY Fest is an event based on the belief that self-sufficiency and sharing knowledge with others helps to empower both individuals and communities, and that will not happen unless we take action and do it ourselves.

The Binghamton DIY Fest is an event that will be occurring on April 30th from 10AM-5PM in the Fine Arts Building on SUNY Binghamton campus. There will be workshops on various topics ranging from bike repair and making your own shampoo and soap to protest tactics and community organizing. Student and Community groups will be tabling and others will be selling their crafts. Beautiful local art will be on display and some will be on sale. There will be a Really, Really Free Market (see description below)! There will be free films screened all day. Musicians from all over the northeast and elsewhere will be in town to play sweet acoustic music during the day and then kick out the jams when night falls at the after-party (location and time TBA).

We want you to come and participate and expose yourself to new ideas, and share your own ideas and skills with your fellow community members.

WORKSHOPS: If you would like to lead a workshop, discussion, class, or other activity please send the following information: Title of workshop, a brief description of the workshop, and the expected length. If you need a room larger than one that can accommodate thirty people, please let us know.

ART: An important part of building a closer community is encouraging creativity and self-expression. If you would like to display or sell your work at the DIY Fest please contact us and send us your name, contact information, and a description of your work. This description is more along the lines of size and how it can be displayed rather than description of themes. Space available will depend on how many artists register to display their art, and may come down to a first come, first serve basis. We do not know if we will have room for sculptures, but we will do our best to see if it can happen.

Really, Really Free Market: The RRFM is a space that will contain items that are free for the taking. What’s the catch? There is none! These items are donated by people that realize that while they may no longer have a use for them, someone else might. Instead of just adding to the local landfill and pollution, these items are freecycled back into the hands of someone else which promotes waste reduction and reducing our participation in the consumerist culture. If you have items to contribute to the RRFM, but will be unable to drop them off at the DIY Fest please contact us and we will try to make arrangements to pick them up.

HOUSING: If you're coming from a long distance to either lead a workshop or just attend the fest, we have places for you to stay the night, so long as you're comfortable with couches and floors. If you do need housing, it is asked that you pre-register for the fest so that we can be sure to accommodate your needs. Send us your name, contact information, and any allergies/special needs we should be aware of.

Sincerely,
The Binghamton DIY Collective
